The way the Booksellers and Publishers Guild cancelled publication of
Taslima Nasrin's book Nirbasan at Kolkata Boimela is shameful and
shocking too.Guild cowed down to the threat of a fundamentalist group
not to publish the book.Govt too yielded to the threat as instruction
to stop publication of Taslima's Nirbasan came from Lalbazar.Police
administration apprehended law and order problem in case the book was
published at Boimela. How can a section of people infringe upon the
freedom of expression of others? Can they dictate which people should
not read?Definitely not.Freedom of expression is our fundamental
right.Perhaps Guild at Kolkata Boimela and govt as well took cue
from Jaipur Literature Festival where Salman Rushdie's invitation to
the Fair was ultimately cancelled lest it could rue a section of
Muslim fundamentalists at election time. It's unfortunate that
sometimes vote bank determines our freedom of expression.
